FEET AT WORK
Working on your feet all day can do a number on your feet, legs, and back.
Whether you’re cooking on a restaurant line, cutting hair in a salon, teaching in a classroom, or folding T-shirts at a clothing store, making an extra effort to take good care of your feet and legs can go a long way toward staying healthy and happy.
FOOT HEALTH AT WORK
Throughout the day, your job might involve walking, standing for long stretches of time, lifting heavy loads and jumping on and off machinery. While you are working your feet may absorb up to three times your body weight. Your feet might clock up over 20 kilometres over the course of the working day! Some of the foot problems that can occur or be aggravated at work include stress fractures, sprains, strains, corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, chilblains and tinea.
RISKS IN THE WORKPLACE
Your work environment could create health risks for your feet. Hazardous conditions, like oily and slippery floors, wet conditions or extreme heat or cold – put feet at risk of injury and can lead to foot problems. In almost every workplace there is the risk of trips, slips and falls, or objects falling or rolling onto feet. Be aware of foot hazards and use foot-safe work practices and wear the necessary footwear to protect your feet.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FEET
STRETCH WHEN YOU CAN
Your muscles can become stiff and painful as you stand or walk all day. Stop every hour or so to stretch, relax, and lengthen your tightened muscles.
WEAR SUPPORTIVE SHOES
Shoes that are properly fitted with comfortable inners, lower heels and good arch support are recommended to reduce discomfort and prevent foot injury. Depending on your workplace, you may be required to wear steel-toe boots.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET AT HOME
Many foot problems can be prevented simply by washing your feet regularly, and inspecting feet for corns, calluses and cuts. Don’t forget to keep your nails in good condition. Your feet are more likely to be injured if you are on your feet all day, so looking after your feet will make your working day easier and pain-free.
FOOT INJURIES AT WORK
Report any injury to your supervisor immediately for necessary first aid. See your podiatrist if further treatment on the injured foot is recommended. Proper foot care improves your efficiency and keeps you going.
Rest
Get off your feet and rest the injured area.
Ice
Gently an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes at a time over two hours. Never apply ice directly to the skin – wrap the ice pack in a towel.
Compression
Lightly wrap a bandage around the injured area, taking care not to pull it too tight.
Elevation
Sit in a position that you can elevate the injured foot higher than your waist, to reduce any swelling or pain.
