WINTER on the Sunshine Coast means cool evenings and crisp and clear, sunny days.Image of old woman island from the beach on the sunshine coast with a tree in the foreground

As a walker, rider or paddler, there are so many things you can do on the Sunshine Coast to enjoy the great outdoors.

Before venturing out, follow these top tips for winter foot care to ensure you have no nasty surprises at the end of the day.

1. Keep your feet warm and dry:

  • Choose the right footwear:
Opt for comfortable, well-fitting boots or shoes that provide adequate support and insulation.
  • Wear breathable socks:
Choose socks made of natural fibres like wool, cotton, or merino wool, as they help wick away moisture and keep your feet warm.
  • Change socks regularly:
If your feet get wet or sweaty, change your socks immediately to prevent cold and potential infections.
  • Avoid tight footwear:
Tight shoes can restrict blood flow, making your feet colder and increasing the risk of cold-related conditions.

2. Moisturise and protect your skin:

  • Apply moisturiser:Image of a bottle of Restorate Foot Balm for moisturising feet as part of winter foot care tips
Use a moisturiser, especially after washing and drying your feet, to combat dryness and cracking.
  • Avoid excessive moisture:
While moisturising is important, be careful not to apply too much, especially between the toes, as this can create an environment for fungal infections.
  • Exfoliate:
Regularly exfoliate your feet to remove dead skin cells and prevent calluses and corns.

3. Prevent and treat cold-related problems:

  • Protect from the cold:
Wear warm boots or slippers when outdoors and indoors.
  • Avoid direct heat:
Don’t warm your feet in front of a fire or heater for too long, as this can cause burns.
  • Manage chilblains:
If you develop chilblains (small, painful, itchy bumps on the toes and heels), keep your feet warm and dry, and use a moisturiser.
  • Boost circulation:
Gentle exercise and elevating your legs can improve circulation to your feet, helping to keep them warm.

4. Toenail care:

  • Keep toenails trimmed:Image of a podiatrist's hands cutting someone's toenails as part of winter foot care tips
Trimming toenails properly can help prevent ingrown toenails and foot pain.
  • Don’t use nail polish:
Avoid using nail polish, as it can trap moisture and create an environment for fungal infections.
  • Use nail conditioning treatments:
Apply a nail conditioning treatment to both your finger and toenails to keep them healthy.

5. Foot hygiene:

  • Wash your feet daily:
Wash your feet daily with warm water and soap, and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  • Soak your feet:
Periodic foot soaks with Epsom salts can help soothe tired feet, prevent infections, and improve circulation.

  • Consult a podiatrist: If you have persistent foot problems or are concerned about your foot health, consult a podiatrist.
