Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT)

Foot mobilisation therapy (FMT) is a hands-on treatment for the joints of the foot and ankle. At Sports and Structural Podiatry in Maroochydore, it is often used alongside exercise, footwear advice and other care as part of your treatment plan.

What it is

What is foot mobilisation therapy?

The foot has 26 bones and more than 30 joints that need to move well for comfortable walking, running and standing. FMT is a manual therapy where gentle, precise pressure is used to move these joints and reduce joint restriction. Applying a stretch to the joint surfaces and the soft tissue around them is intended to support repair and improve how the foot functions.

Foot mobilisation techniques are part of Alana’s special interest in sports podiatry, alongside stretching, strengthening and orthotic therapy where needed.

Hands-on treatment for the joints of the foot

Who it may help

When FMT may be part of your plan

  • Stiff feet or ankles, including stiffness after an ankle sprain
  • Heel pain and plantar fasciopathy
  • Forefoot pain, including metatarsalgia
  • Midfoot pain and arch discomfort
  • Stiffness linked to arthritis in the foot and ankle
  • Foot pain that affects the way you walk or run

FMT is not right for everyone. Your podiatrist will assess your feet first and explain whether it is suitable for you.

Your visit

What happens at your appointment

A typical FMT appointment covers four things.

01

Assessment

We take a history and examine how the joints of your feet and ankles move, and where movement is restricted.

02

Treatment

Gentle, precise pressure is applied to the joints that are stiff. Most people feel pressure rather than pain.

03

Exercises

We show you exercises to help keep the joints moving between appointments.

04

Review

We check how your feet are responding and adjust the plan, which may include other treatments.

Does FMT hurt?

FMT is gentle. Most people feel pressure and movement rather than pain. Some people notice mild soreness afterwards, which usually settles quickly.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your feet and what you are being treated for. We will discuss a plan with you after your assessment and review it as you go.

FMT is a technique that focuses on the joints of the foot and ankle. It is used by podiatrists who have completed additional training in the method.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with us. If your GP has referred you, please bring the referral to your appointment.

Can I claim on my health fund?

If your private health insurance includes extras cover for podiatry, you may be able to claim part of the cost. Check with your fund for your level of cover.
